The vinyl on the shelf

As a team, we made it our mission in 2021 to gather together a nice little collection of vinyl to keep in the office and play on Fridays when we are all onsite. Our choices are varied, and much treasured, bringing back sweet recollections of good times past.

From warm childhood memories, to OE's, road trips and all night sessions on the dancefloor, these tunes were the soundtrack to our youth and inspired our lives growing up. As the needle hits the vinyl, we are instantly transported back to those times. The toe-tapping and humming along is infectious, and Fridays are extra fun as a result!

Sample the collection below and come listen sometime!

The album that inspired Lance's drumming career

Dookie, GreenDay. 1994.

This was my first CD I ever purchased. I had also just started drumming and I played along to this everyday in my parents' lounge. The neighbourhood and my parents love this album a little less than I do...

Ten concerts in ten years for this dedicated fan

Ghosts, SIX60, 2019.

I chose SIX60, because they cancelled their summer concert and I have been going to every show in Wellington since for almost 10 years! I also love supporting NZ music.

Harking back to the Wellington Drum & Bass scene in the late 90s

Masterpiece, Goldie, 2014.

In my early twenties the music I lived for was drum&bass. Wellington in those days had a neat little underground D&B scene based in Studio9. We danced until dawn with friends and other regulars and had the best nights. I saw Goldie live and he was every bit extroverted and out there as expected. It was a loud, energetic and memorable night!

A new appreciation of an classic band after a concert with friends

Rumours, Fleetwood Mac, 1979.

I never really was much of Fleetwood Mac fan however I became one after the Velocity crew went to the 2019 Fleetwood concert in Auckland. Now playing this album reminds me of that trip, and the good times we had.

Brendon

The kiwi tradition of the UK OE

Tattoo You, Rolling Stones. 1981.

I saw the Rolling Stones at Old Trafford and it was one of the best concerts I have been to. This album brings back great memories of my OE in the UK, amazing travel experiences and making new friends, fun times!!

Tania.

Is this love that I'm feeling?

Burnin', Bob Marley and the Wailers. 1973.

My contribution is based around my observation that a little more love and understanding is what the world needs right now.  Bob Marley sums it up the best!!

From fond memories youth spent on Oriental Parade

Mechanical Bull, Kings of Leon, 2013.

One of my first jobs out of high school was as a Barista at Bernie's on The Bay on Oriental Parade. I would always play this album on my shifts, and listening to it takes me back to my first summer of freedom - smelling like coffee grinds and watching the dogs of Oriental Bay from the little hole-in-the wall café. Good times.

Good times on a lad's road trip to Ohakune

Something beginning with C, The Exponents. 1992.

This takes me back to a boys' weekends away in Ohakune as a teenager, and to Hot Lava, the main nightclub. The Exponents played a live set and we knew all of the words to the songs. They were a constant on the radio and today have stood the test of time. This album brings back great memories from the 'good ol' days!'

Music is key to a movie's ambience

The Classics, Hans Zimmer.

I've always been a 'movie's over music' person, but I love how music can really enhance a visual moment. Some of my favourite movie memories are having a little piece of the soundtrack stuck in my head for years after... yes, I'm talking about Pirates Of The Caribbean.

Ben.

Beautiful music that moves the soul

Haeremai Ki Au, Various. 1976.

The finance world is full of old white men, with old white men suits, and old white men music! My choice in album is an attempt to redress this imbalance!

Childhood memories

Leonard Cohen, Greatest Hits. Leonard Cohen. 1975.

Leonard Cohen is an artist I've grown up listening to from my parents collection and I still find the combination of his amazing voice and lyrics hard to beat. I also think the song "Everybody Knows" was a formative influence on my world view and remains one of my favourite songs.

Elizabeth.

Can't go past this favourite.

Greatest Hits, Queen. 1981.

I chose Queen because I have always loved their music, and I really enjoyed the movie too!

Rebecca.
