If you think hiring a professional is expensive, you should try hiring an amateur

Are you a financial amateur? You need a coach.

All professionals have more coaches than amateurs. Look at how many staff are in a formula one team, or the number of nurses and doctors in theatre for a major operation.

Question - Are you a financial pro, or an amateur? I'll go a step further. Is your future and your family's future in the hands of a professional, or an amateur?

I'm guess it might be in the hands of an amateur - and I say this with love and no judgement. We've all been there.

Why it matters

I have invested years in therapy, juice cleanses, yoga workshops, podcasts coming out my ears, stoic philosophy, and journals littering bedroom floors because I want to be the best version of who I am. I also want to be more aware of how I affect those around me. I don't know anyone my age who has this whole adulting piece figured out without having a bit of external assistance.  My own results have varied but are certainly better than if I had been left to figure it all out myself.

The reason why my effort into the above matters is my children and loved ones. They are the most important and there is no question about that.  I have worked my entire life to provide and do the absolute best by them.

So, seeking assistance for personal life has been worthwhile investment.

What is also a good investment? Professional advice. Let's face it, we could all use from time to time.

Find a coach, get a plan.

The benefit of hindsight is such a wonderful thing, isn't it? Now I am a financial adviser, I am wishing that the past version of myself had cottoned on to this financial advice piece earlier and got himself a coach, way back then. It sure would have saved me a lot of pain. A financial coach for my 20-something self would have challenged and questioned my plans and helped me make better decisions that I would be reaping the rewards from as my 50-something self today.

I don't beat myself up, however. I did my best with the tips and tricks gleaned from well-meaning others (family, aka. amateurs, included), and I sought good legal and accounting advice, but I never had "the plan" in place. I am in a good position but could have been better off.

A plan is something that my team and I help people with now, because we truly understand the value that this has on life opportunities and outcomes.

Walking the talk

In 2023, Brendon and myself are implementing a programme for all Velocity Financial staff interested to have a detailed financial plan put in place for their own personal affairs.

We have been talking about for some time, but with the current state of affairs that the world is in, we recognise that a plan is vital now.

They will be an opportunity for everyone to plan/question/probe with someone who trained in the dark art of financial planning and implementation. The Velocity crew are really excited about this.  They have seen how it has worked for our clients and the sense of relief and enthusiasm that clients experience, once plans are implemented for them.

It is November as I write this, and summer is coming. I feel that with this plan up our sleeves, we are getting a jump on some positive new year's activities for 2023.

We will keep you informed as to how this programme is going.

First, just talk

Want to talk to our financial planning team about how a plan can help you? It costs nothing to get informed and could save you a whole bunch later on down the track.

About Graham

Hi there, I’m Graham and I started Velocity Financial nearly 20 years ago. I had for many years been running youth development programmes for The Salvation Army and I liked the idea of continuing to help people thrive in other areas of their lives. It started with helping first homebuyers, and I now work mostly with business owners. This is around planning, lending, and managing risk for them and their staff. I’m passionate about community and connecting those in need with opportunity. I’ve been very privileged to do this in my previous career, now in my business and also for 20 years as a Trustee of the Te Aro Health Clinic. Our clinic delivers high quality healthcare for Wellington's most vulnerable and I'm very proud of the fact that Te Aro is now an integral part of Wellington City Health system. I work in New Zealand's two best cities, Tauranga and Wellington. In Tauranga I swim, bike and run (maybe YOGA if I'm feeling particularly aware!) and in Wellington I mostly seem to buy my adult children dinner and drinks.
